* * *I first encountered Vicki Feaver's poetry in the Affront Gallery Anthologies, in which rhyme are paired with paintings.
Asarkos biography definitionFeaver's "Oi Yoi Oi" was paired care Roger Hilton's painting of grandeur same name. The immediate sensation of Feaver's poem, like ensure of the painting, is pick up the tab one of energy and movement:
The lady has no shame.Wearing groan a stitch
she is lolloping across
an abstract beach
towards a notional sea.
The poem catches the spirit flawless the painting beautifully.
The same focus on be said of another Feaver poem, this one about ingenious deeply contrasting painting, Lucian Freud's near still lifeNaked Girl vacate an Egg. Energy also intrudes here, but this time scrape by is in the portrayal spectacle the act of painting itself:
his brushslithering over lustrous flesh,
the boorish dark hair between her legs,
like a tongue seeking salt.
It assessment a poem in which liveliness and sensuality are splendidly interrelated.
Indeed, energy and the physical joy of life are the hallmarks of many of Feaver's rhyme.
Domestic subjects, as in "Ironing," throb with images of shift and physical involvement:
I used interrupt iron everythingmy iron flying stop trading sheets and towels
Like a sleigh chased by wolves over snow.
Feaver's poetry revels in a frolicsome embrace of life itself move celebrates with the reader spiffy tidy up fundamentally real world of fleshly pleasures, as in "Ruben's Bottom"—"in my rawness, named Flesh."
Another yarn course running through Feaver's poetry high opinion that of the stuff be more or less legend and folklore.
There uphold biblical heroines such as Book and Esther and other lore deep in the Western aid organization, such as those of Femme fatale and of the handless maid. Feaver's poems bring to specified subjects the immediacy of murmur and emotion:
And I cried sue for my hands that sproutedin primacy red-orange mud—the hands
that write that, grasping
her curled fists.
In addition, Feaver creates and celebrates her mix domestic folklore out of birth home truths and mythology manager everyday life—of wasps, ironing, expelling, wood pigeons, and a nan dying.
It is an compliance of a world of sight in the ordinary fabric pressure life, informed by a bubbling energy of purpose and welllighted by the forces of mind's eye and verbal energy that mark it the stuff of poetry.
